    By Wandile Msibi

English Premier League Champions Manchester City have been charged with numerous breaches of financial rules, after a 4-year investigation was conducted. The alleged breaches took place between the 2009-10 season up until the 2017-18 season, this is not the first time the English Giants have been accused of breaching financial rules as also in 2020 they were on the brink of facing a two year suspension from European Football.

The Cityzens replied in a statement by saying:”We are surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches, we somehow welcome the review of this matter.”

The first set of breaches saw the club breach league rules requiring provision ‘in utmost good faith’ of ‘accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position.’

Second set of breaches listed refers to “require a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts, relating its manager”, this occurred between the 2009-10 to 2012-13 seasons.

The third set of breaches deals with the team breaching the Premier League rules which require clubs to comply with UEFA financial fair play regulations, between 2013-14 to 2017-18.

Fourth set of breaches relates to the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules in the 2015-16 to 2017-18 seasons.

In a recent statement the Premier League said:”In accordance with the Premier League rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today (6 February 2023) referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League rules by Manchester City Football Club to a commission under Premier League W.3.4.

Now the question is, are Chelsea F.C also guilty of breaching financial fair play rules?

  • Are the woes over for Manchester United?

    By Wandile Msibi

Since the appointing of Dutch Coach, Erik Ten Hag, the team of Manchester United has transformed into a force to be reckoned with and possibly Premier League title contenders. With the join second most clean sheets in the Premier League, after Newcastle United, Manchester United are looking at their best season since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

    Theatre of Dreams

With an impressive run of 15 games unbeaten at home, it seems as if Ten Hag is bringing back the reputation of the stadium which is known as the “THEATRE OF DREAMS”. Saturday’s 3-1 victory against championship side Reading took it to 15 games with a loss at the Stretford end with possibly one of the best signings of the 2022/23 season, Casemiro netting a brace and Fred putting the final nail in the coffin.

Casemiro has proved to be the difference maker in the squad and is certainly living to his “Tell them I’ll fix this” quote that he said prior to signing to Manchester United. And also Erik Ten Hag is also living up to the words he said about how the Liverpool vs. Man City era is coming to an end, In an impressive run of home wins against the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, he has silenced all the doubters. With an upcoming second leg Carabao Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, one can wonder if he is truly the man who will bring the glory days back to United.

Just Weeks after officially retiring from football, former Wales captain Gareth Bale has announced that he will be participating at the AT&T’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am in Los Angeles, Carolina.

  • Dani Alves arrested in Catalonia

    By Wandile Msibi

Brazilian Right-back Dani Alves has been arrested in Catalonia last week Friday in suspicions of sexual assault, reports suggest that the alleged victim claims that Alves assaulted her at Sutton nightclub in Barcelona. Thus leading to an investigation by the local police.

Alves is currently the player with the most trophies won, he has 43 trophies to his name

These shocking allegations have shook the footballing industry with some people including former teammate and current FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez commenting on this issue. Xavi said “it’s difficult to comment on a situation like this. I am surprised and shocked. I am in a state of shock. Justice will rule whatever it is, we can’t go in. I feel very bad for him.” However just 24 hours later he went on to apologize and clarified that he is not supporting anyone after receiving criticism from people stating that he is supporting Alves. He went on to say after the game vs. Getafe, “I am surprised that Dani could have done any of these things. I understand the critism and I apologize.”

Another person who spoke about against these allegations is Dani Alves’s former spouse, Dinorah Santana. She said:”I’m still in shock. It seems like a nightmare and it’s not happening.” She further defended him by saying, “I say this because I’ve know him for 22 years and was married to him for 10 years. This has been a shock to me and for my children. I have two teenagers who are suffering.” Matters became worse for Dani after he was sacked by the Mexican Club Pumas UNAM after these allegations were made.

Dani Alves with his ex wife Dinorah Santana

His wife Joana Sanz recently went to social media to ask for privacy by stating, “I ask the media outside my house to please respect my privacy at this time, my mother passed away a week ago. I have barely started to realize that she is no longer here and then they already start to torment me with my husband’s situation. I have lost two pillars of my life. Have a little empathy, Instead of looking for news in other people’s pain, thank you.” Now the question is, are these allegations true or are they just another lie from someone looking for publicity as seen in recent years as Neymar Jr. and Cristiano Ronaldo were falsely accused of the same allegations.

  • End of an era.

    By Wandile Msibi

Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier, John Cena vs. Randy Orton, Ronda Rousey vs. Amanda Nunes. Those are the greatest sports rivalries of the 21st century, however they are nothing compared to the intense yet entertaining rivalry between two football gods, Lionel “La Pulga” Messi and the master of the “siuuuu”, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi and Ronaldo in their first encounter at the 2009 UEFA Champions League final

With 12 Ballon d’or’s to their names(7 for Messi and 5 for Ronaldo), they have taken the footballing world by storm since upon making their debuts in the early 2000s. They have completely shattered records that were expected to last for a very long time, however with the certain skills they have and the anticipation the fans had when watching them one would say it was not a surprise that they achieved that. Ronaldo is currently the leading goal scorer(men and women) with 819 goals in 1144 matches with with Messi not far behind by having a goal tally of 796 in 1023 games. Another aspect to look at is their trophy collection, both Individually and part of a team with Ronaldo being part of the Real Madrid team which made history by winning the UEFA Champions League three consecutive times between 2015/16 to 2017/18 and Lionel Messi’s Barcelona winning a total of six trophies during the 2008/09 season. However as one would notice time is not on their side and the unfortunate fact is that their time is almost up.

Respect and friendly competition is what exists among the two men as both have gone to praise one another about how they transformed soccer and it will be truly a sad day for football fans when the two G.O.A.Ts hang up their boots.

Possibly the last dance for two football icons.
